Trust may be the key to the spread of artificial intelligence

In July, GKI conducted a survey of 1,000 people, representative of the population, to gauge how widely artificial intelligence (AI) has penetrated everyday life.

How much do people trust AI?

Artificial intelligence has become a common topic of conversation at home and in the workplace. Some find the content it produces reliable—22% of respondents—but sceptics are more numerous, accounting for 36%, while the majority remain ambivalent, occupying the middle ground at 42%.

Interestingly, trust in AI tends to be higher among frequent users. The relationship is, of course, mutual: why would anyone turn to AI if they deemed it unreliable? Nevertheless, as artificial intelligence evolves and its user base expands, societal trust is expected to rise.

What does the demographic picture reveal?

Students are the only group that tends to place more trust in AI than not. Among active workers, sentiment is slightly negative, while retirees are generally sceptical. Age correlates inversely with trust: the older the respondent, the less confidence they have in artificial intelligence. Men, too, display slightly more scepticism than women.

Note: Responses were reweighted on a scale from –100 to +100, where –100 indicates complete distrust, 0 represents moderate trust, and +100 denotes very high trust.

An international perspective – we lag behind, but the potential is substantial.

According to research by KPMG and the University of Melbourne, Hungary ranks seventh from the bottom among 47 countries in terms of regular AI use, third from last for workplace usage, and last for participation in AI training. Yet Hungarians display greater trust in artificial intelligence than the global average.

There is, therefore, considerable potential for harnessing AI in Hungary. The existing trust provides a solid foundation for companies, educational institutions, and government programs to actively support skills development, awareness-raising, and practical applications related to artificial intelligence.
