Intellectual predecessor (1928–1949)
The intellectual predecessor, the Hungarian Institute for Economic Research (Magyar Gazdaságkutató Intézet – MGKI), operated between 1928 and 1949. The founding director of MGKI was István Varga, who led the institute until its dissolution. A prominent member of the MGKI was Béla Balassa, who later gained international recognition.
Experts and economists of the intellectual predecessor, GKI Economic Research Co. (formerly still the Hungarian Institute for Economic Research), participated in economic analyses and planning related to the introduction of the forint. The institute’s staff contributed to the development of measures aimed at curbing inflation and restoring economic stability, which ultimately led to the introduction of the new currency, the forint.
The researchers and analysts of the institute played a key role in ensuring that the introduction of the forint addressed the inflationary problems associated with the previous currency, the pengő, and contributed to restoring economic stability. Their analyses and recommendations supported policymakers in implementing effective measures for the successful launch of the forint.
Therefore, the experts and researchers of GKI Economic Research Co. indeed played an important role in preparing for the introduction of the forint and in shaping economic policy in 1946.
The direct predecessor, the Institute for Economic Research (GKI), operated between 1966 and 1992 and was established as part of the formation of a new economic system. The GKI was affiliated with the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and functioned in cooperation with the reform of the planned economy.
GKI Economic Research Co. was founded in 1992 by the former staff of the dissolved Institute for Economic Research, along with banks, employer associations, and 154 renowned economic experts. This initiative was led by András Vértes. The company was originally named GKI Economic Research Company (GKI Gazdaságkutató Részvénytársaság). Over time, the institute’s staff and other stakeholders gradually acquired most of the shares, and by the 2000s, the management of GKI had become the primary shareholders.
Since then, GKI Economic Research Co. has continued to evolve and has become a key player in Hungarian economic research. It conducts comprehensive analyses, studies, and research projects, and provides services for the economic sector and political decision-makers.
GKI Economic Research Co. (1992–)
Several employees of Economic Research Institute (that was dissolved by the government) as well as banks, employer organisations and 154 renowned economists established GKI Economic Research Co. in October, 1992.
